also's Amazing Book Race

Since 2005, also's Amazing Book Race raises funds through individual pledges and institutional giving in support of this fun, literacy awareness event.

This year's event was held on Sept. 17, 2008.

also's Amazing Book Race is a fun-packed day where teams of 5-6 people race around to Ottawa's independent bookstores and public library branches. At each location, the teams are given literacy-based tasks such as reading a story to a group of people or completing a word search. Once a team has visited all the stations, they return to the starting point to claim their prize and rest with some much-deserved refreshments. It is a great day out with family, friends, colleagues, and neighbours – come and enjoy!

One participants experience…

One highlight of the race was when one of our team members performed his Big Bad Wolf rap at the Nicholas Hoare bookstore, much to the amusement of the people sitting at an outdoor cafe nearby. Another one was reading the story of Clifford the Red Dog and acting at the same time at the Kaleidoscope bookstore in the Glebe. Our team's biggest disappointment was when we couldn't find any words from the given letters at the Sunnyside Library. The fact that we all worked at the library and did not find more than a few words was hard to swallow! Our team had a wonderful, if not tiring, day and is anxiously awaiting next year's event.”
