There are several different ways people in our community can get involved with also.

also learners volunteer in our Community Works program. Community Works provides also learners with opportunities to gain valuable workplace skills while volunteering in Heartwood House.

Community members can learn about current volunteer opportunities with also on the Volunteer Ottawa website.

High school students volunteer as part of their 40 hours of community service.

University students volunteer as part of the Community Services Learning Program at the University of Ottawa. Students also volunteer as part of a co-op placement at Ottawa or Carleton University.

These opportunities are open to:

  • also learners
  • community members
  • high school and university students

Application process:

Think about it…

In 2004, Stats Can completed a volunteering survey and found that…

  • the top three reasons for volunteering were: to make a contribution to the community, to use new skills and experiences, and being affected by the organizations cause
  • the survey also found that 11.8 million Canadians volunteered their time to non-profit organizations
  • that's about 2 billion hours – the equivalent of 1 million full time jobs
  • and more than a quarter of unemployed volunteers said that their volunteering helped them get a job
